AutoZone is an aftermarket automobile parts and accessories retailer and distributor in the United States. Rooted in its culture of customer service, AutoZone was founded by J.R. “Pitt” Hyde III when he identified a gap in the market for a retail automobile parts store while researching new opportunities for his grandfather’s wholesale foods company, Malone & Hyde. In 1979, Pitt opened the first AutoZone store, called “Auto Shack” at the time, and operated it as a division of Malone & Hyde. In the timespan of one year, Auto Shack had eight stores in two states. In 1987, Hyde incorporated AutoZone and the company’s growth continued. Today, AutoZone has more than 6,000 stores across the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Brazil.
